We are all creatures of habit. Whether or not you recognise it, your habits shape many of the things you do – or don’t do – on a daily basis.
During times of change or uncertainty creating new habits can bring a sense of balance and control. But many of us find it easier said than done to incorporate new habits into our lives. Micro habits are defined as small, simple actions you can take every day that will help you achieve big results.
You can use micro habits to transform virtually any facet of your life; by starting small and keeping the big picture in mind, you will make it much easier for yourself to ease into those transformations. Whether you are hoping to eat healthier, exercise more often, watch less television, spend more time in nature, or something else, micro habits can help you make it happen.
By starting small and leveraging micro-habits you can make it easier to embrace new ways of being.
So, consider:
- Do a 2-minute breathing exercise every morning after brushing your teeth
- Drink a glass of water when you wake up before reaching for the coffee or tea
- Take a 5-minute break every 60 minutes when at work
- Read one interesting online article every day
- Go for a 5 minute walk every day
- Turn your cell phone off when eating meals
- Listen to some relaxing music for 5 minutes
- Cook a new meal once a week
- Write for 5 minutes every day
- Listen to a podcast
- Reduce your coffee intake by one cup a day
Remember, small repeatable things matter.
