The Ian Haynes Memorial Scholarship offers aspiring law students the financial support needed to excel in their studies and make a meaningful impact in the legal profession. Honouring the legacy of Ian Haynes and his significant contributions to the College and the legal profession, this scholarship provides up to $12,000 over four years to help cover course fees and living expenses.

Now in its second year, the annual Ian Haynes Memorial Scholarship supports aspiring law students in the commencement of their law degrees.


Scholarship details:

  • Annual scholarship of $3,000 per year, renewable for up to four consecutive years (totalling a maximum of $12,000).
  • The scholarship can be used as a contribution to course fees and board (when not living in your home city).

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to second-year Law Students (first-year at time of application).
  • Ability to demonstrate strong academic performance.
  • Ability to demonstrate interest in pursuing a career in law.
  • Ability to demonstrate financial need.
  • Two referees are required to support your application.

Applicants must submit a written piece of up to 1,500 words addressing the following questions:

  • What motivates you to pursue a career in law?
  • What makes you a strong candidate for the Ian Haynes Memorial Scholarship?
  • How would this scholarship impact you and your legal studies?
  • How do you envision making a positive contribution to the legal profession?


Two referees will be required for independent verification for the candidate as will academic transcripts throughout the duration of the scholarship.

Applications close 31 January, 2025. Interviews will then take place, with the confirmation of the successful applicant occurring in February, 2025.

Who can apply for the scholarship?

The scholarship is open to first-year law students transitioning into their second year of studies.

I have not received my examination results yet. Can I still apply?

Yes! Even though you may not have been accepted into second-year law yet, we encourage students to apply for the scholarship.

How can I submit my application?

Applications can be submitted through the "APPLY NOW" button (survey link), along with the required documentation.

What file format should my written submission be in?

Your written submission should be submitted as a PDF or Word document to ensure compatibility.

Does the referee information count towards the 1,500 word limit?

No, the referee contact info will not count in the 1,500 word limit. We use this referee information to independently verify candidates.

How are the scholarship recipients selected?

Recipients are chosen based on their written submissions, academic ability, and other criteria outlined in the eligibility requirements.

What happens if I miss the application deadline?

Late applications will not be considered, so it's essential to submit your application on time (by 31 January, 2025).

Ian Haynes

Ian had an impressive 60-year career in property law, holding key positions such as a Judicial Conduct Commissioner and President of the Auckland District Law Society. Ian also chaired the College of Law and the Spencer Mason Trust. His exceptional service earned him a Fellowship (FCL) and an honorary Master of Laws degree (Hon LLM) from the College of Law, as well as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) appointment from the Government. The College of Law New Zealand initiated the Ian Haynes Memorial Scholarship in recognition of him as an outstanding figure in the profession.
