From a traditional law path to legal education - How College of Law instructor Alison Wallis found her passion

Published on 31 August 2022

Alison Wallis took the traditional legal career path before the opportunity to join the College of Law New Zealand arose. Learn more about her career to date and what she loves about her job.

What was your first job in law?

I followed a fairly traditional path into work, from University, into a graduate role at large Christchurch firm Duncan Cotterill. It was a wonderful beginning to my career although looking back I recall how little law school had really prepared me for life in law! I did have very supportive supervising partners, who had a lot of patience.

What led you to your current role?

I was happily working in a legal role, when an old friend who was working for College of Law at that time approached me to be part of the start up instructor team here in 2004. I was initially reluctant because I loved the job I was in, but he reminded me that I’d always wanted to give teaching a go. The rest is history as they say. My family are mostly teachers and academics, so I have reverted to type. I am so glad I gave it a go because it has been a fantastic ride seeing how College of Law has grown and thrived in New Zealand.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work in the legal profession?

This is a hard one to answer. Before leaving fulltime practice, there were many satisfying events, good days at the office, but working here at College of Law provides satisfaction on a different level. Now the most rewarding thing is probably when students keep in touch with me many years after their study, maybe to talk about a job change or just to catch up. Or being asked to be moving counsel on admission day at the High Court.

What achievements are you most proud of in your career to date?

College of Law New Zealand was privileged to be involved for three years (2013-2015) with pre-admission training for Samoan graduates and I was lucky enough to be heavily involved with that project, culminating in an idyllic month spent working in Apia, Samoa – I don’t think work gets much better than that! My connection to the Samoan graduates has resulted in wonderful friendships, and inspired me to complete an LLM focused on Pacific legal issues.

Tell us more about you: what are your interests outside of the law?

My husband and I have recently relocated to a country area (near Dargaville on Northland’s west coast), 150km from busy Auckland – a long cherished dream. I am fortunate however to be able to stay in Auckland three days per week, to enjoy working in the office with other College of Law team members and spend some city time with my two adult children.
