This course focuses on resolving childcare matters through Family Law, in New Zealand.
In this course you will learn: the mechanisms available to parents for resolving childcare disputes outside of Court; the principles set out in the Care of Children Act 2004; about your obligations as a lawyer advising on childcare matters; and how to apply for a parenting order and the related process.
This course comprises six topics:
- Topic 1: Care of Children Act principles
- Topic 2: Lawyer obligations when advising clients
- Topic 3: Reaching agreement outside of Court
- Topic 4: Applying for a Parenting Order
- Topic 5: Court process
- Topic 6: Parenting Orders and Family Court Procedure
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Advise a client as to their options for reaching agreement on childcare matters and/or resolving a childcare dispute
- Draft a parenting agreement
- Draft an application for a parenting order and an affidavit in support
- Understand the process a parenting order application follows through the court
This course is equivalent to 3 CPD hours.

Anna Chapman
Anna Chapman is a Partner at JB Morrison Lawyers (formerly Morrison Kent). Anna joined Morrison Kent Wellington in January 2018 and was appointed to the Lawyer for Child list in February 2018 and has been specializing in family law since 2012. She advises on all family law issues and has significant family court experience. She is also a co-author of LexisNexis Practical Guidance NZ – Family.
