The Relationship Property Foundation guide is an introductory course for practitioners new to the field of Relationship Property.

This course focusses on the basic rules that apply to the division of property between couples, some common exceptions to those rules, and options for resolving matters.

This course comprises seven topics:

  • Topic 1: Qualifying relationships
  • Topic 2: Relationship property
  • Topic 3: Separate property
  • Topic 4: Presumption of equal sharing and common exceptions
  • Topic 5: Process to reaching agreement
  • Topic 6: Common issues in relationship property cases
  • Topic 7: Applying to the Court under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (PRA)

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify whether a client is in a qualifying relationship for the purpose of the PRA
  • Classify assets/liabilities as relationship property or separate property
  • Advise a client as to the property division process.
  • Draft a settlement agreement
  • Understand the process for applying to court under the PRA.

This course is equivalent to 3 CPD hours.

Anna Chapman

Anna Chapman is a Partner at JB Morrison Lawyers (formerly Morrison Kent).  Anna joined Morrison Kent Wellington in January 2018 and was appointed to the Lawyer for Child list in February 2018 and has been specializing in family law since 2012. She advises on all family law issues and has significant family court experience. She is also a co-author of LexisNexis Practical Guidance NZ – Family.
